Live Sky Monitor: Aurora, Global Lightning & Satellite Passes
Tonight's aurora from NOAA SWPC, lightning from orbit by NOAA GOES, and meteors and near-Earth objects from NASA — live.
Every panel is observed measurement or published model output from NOAA and NASA. Nothing here computes or implies any correlation, and nothing predicts.

What do people ask about the Sky Monitor?
What does the Sky Monitor show?
Aurora, lightning from orbit, Earth from geostationary orbit, meteors and near-Earth objects, and satellites overhead. The aurora comes from NOAA SWPC's OVATION model, lightning from the GOES Geostationary Lightning Mapper, near-Earth objects from NASA CNEOS and satellite positions from CelesTrak, all reproduced as published.
How does global lightning drive the Schumann resonance?
About 2,000 thunderstorms are active around Earth at any moment, producing roughly fifty lightning flashes every second. Each discharge injects electromagnetic energy into the cavity between the ground and the ionosphere, keeping the global resonance near 7.83 Hz ringing. The lightning panel on this page shows those strokes from orbit.
What did Nikola Tesla find about lightning?
In US Patent 787,412, Tesla wrote that lightning discharges produced electrical waves in the earth with nodal regions following at definite distances the shifting source. From many observations he found their length to vary approximately from twenty-five to seventy kilometers, and concluded such waves may travel over the globe.
